Teams trying to move Thursday games

High school basketball teams are used to having their schedules dictated by football—just not college football.

Most local schools with games scheduled for Thursday night, when Alabama will play Texas in Pasadena, Calif., for college football’s national championship, have rescheduled.

“I knew if I wanted to have a decent crowd, we had to move it,” said Jemison boys coach Stacy McGehee. Jemison’s boys and girls were scheduled to host Holt on Thursday, but the game has been moved to Wednesday at the same time.

Girls basketball games typically begin at 5:30 p.m. or 6 p.m., following a B-team or junior high game, and the boys varsity follows the girls.

Chilton County will still visit Marbury on Thursday, but there will be no B-team game. So, the girls will start at 4 p.m., the boys will follow, and fans should be able to attend the games and still make it home in time to watch the football game, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be aired by ABC.

Thorsby will visit Fultondale at noon Saturday instead of Thursday.

Verbena tried to reschedule its games with Loachapoka on Thursday, but no alternate date could be arranged.

As of press time, Billingsley coaches and players plan to visit Autaugaville on Thursday, though representatives from both schools were still trying to reschedule.

Chilton Christian Academy’s scheduled game at Hope Christian in Birmingham has been canceled.
