A mother and her young daughter were killed Sunday during an overnight fire at a home in Lomax.

Charlene Denise Jackson, 25, and 2-year-old Imya Jackson died in the mobile home blaze.

Clanton Fire Department responded to a fire with possibly trapped residents around 3:15 a.m.

When they arrived, firefighters found the home at 3941 Reed Street engulfed in flames, its roof partially collapsed.

Once the fire was contained, the two bodies were found. The fire started in the living room, where the occupants were sleeping due to the cold weather, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“This is indeed a terrible tragedy. This just goes to show you how quickly lives can be lost,” said Clanton Fire Chief David Driver. “I urge everyone to please keep this family in your prayers.”

Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, foul play is not suspected. Investigators found two electric heaters, a wood stove and a wall mounted propane heater in the living room.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office, along with Clanton Fire Department and Clanton Police Department, are investigating the fire.

“Any time there is a fatality, as in this case, we take all the steps to investigate the case,” said Clanton Police Chief Brian Stilwell. “But as of today, we have no reason to believe this was anything more than a tragic accident, and our hearts go out to the family members.”

Driver thanked Cedar Grove and Thorsby fire departments, which provided assistance with the fire, and East Chilton Fire Department, which assisted in covering Clanton while fighters were on the scene.
