The game-winning shot came with 10 seconds remaining on Monday, but the Chilton County boys basketball team had to hold its breath until a missed free throw gave them a 64-62 win.

The Tigers (7-5) advanced to the championship game of the Champion Sports Medicine Shootout by defeating host Calera.

The game was tied at 35 at halftime, CCHS took a 51-41 lead at the end of the third period, but then saw a rally by the Eagles (8-8) even it up late.

“It was big win for us,” coach Donnie Hand said. “We went to a zone in the second half, and that helped us a lot.

“We had some foul trouble and went to the zone to keep from fouling.”

Taylor Hughes sank the game winner, one of his nine points, but CCHS committed a shooting foul as time expired.

The first free throw attempt was no good, though, and the game was over.
