Brad Boswell drained two 3-pointers in the final 16 seconds to lift Verbena to a 70-69 win over Jemison on Tuesday.

In their season opener, the visitors led for almost the whole game and by as many as seven points with less than 2 minutes remaining in the game, but some crucial Jemison mistakes combined with Boswell’s hot hand to result in Verbena fans rushing the court to celebrate.

The Red Devils are now 3-2 after not having won more than two games in a single season this decade.

Boswell led all scorers with 26 points. Teammate Brandon White scored 21 points.

Jemison, in coach Stacy McGehee’s debut, unveiled a quick full-court pressure defense and an attacking offense.

Both were effective most of the game, but the hosts hung around, never trailing by more than nine points.

Trey Bryant led the Panthers with 22 points.

Verbena girls win first game

In the girls game, Verbena picked up its first win of the season, 50-33, in its fifth try by dominating the paint.

The Red Devils’ post players—Marqueska Deramus and Imma Sanders—crashed the offensive boards and forced Jemison into long jump shots on the other end of the floor.

Deramus finished with a game-high 23 points, and Sanders added 12 points.

Jemison (1-2) was led by Kelsie Mims’ 14 points.
