The halls at Thorsby School on Friday were filled with pink T-shirts and pink ribbons, and the sky outside the school was filled with pink balloons.
Thorsby elementary students released balloons as part of the school’s effort to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Fifth-grade teacher Nicole Hilyer, who organized the effort, said about $1,000 was raised.
“You just want to help because you see all these people having a hard time,” Hilyer said. “You just want to be there for them.”
Students bought balloons for $1 each. Money was also raised by selling “Thorsby goes pink” T-shirts and pink ribbons and with a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for 7th- through 12th-graders.
Hilyer said the town of Thorsby, as well as the school, was supportive of the cause.
“It’s a very loving community,” she said.
