Collaborative effort needed to combat flu
Published 7:36 pm Tuesday, September 22, 2009
I would like to thank all of our parents for continuing to help work through the early flu season. The total number of students being absent each day is returning to a normal percentage. Many children and teachers have been sick, and it will take a collaborative effort by everyone to help us keep the spread of flu to a minimum.
Thorsby High School initiated a new parent notification system last week. The system allows school officials to contact parents by telephone with a pre-recorded message. The first parent notification was to invite parents to a Title 1 School Involvement Meeting.
The new telephone contact system is being paid for by federal Title 1 funds. It is very important for parents to provide accurate telephone numbers to school officials for the new system to be used effectively. Updated information can be sent to the school’s main office or counselor’s office.
The school will host parent involvement events in place of Parent/Teacher Organization events throughout the school year. Please make plans to attend and visit our school. The event dates will be posted on the school Web site, sent home in the form of an announcement letter with students, and by contacting parents by telephone.
The new contact system will also be used in the case of early dismissal of school or in case of school closings. The new system is a great asset for the school and should improve communication between the school and parents.
I would like to thank Mr. Roger Sheffield for his service to Thorsby High School as an administrator and teacher. Mr. Sheffield has served as a part-time assistant principal and part-time teacher at Thorsby High School. He is leaving to accept a full-time position as assistant principal at Maplesville High School. I would like to congratulate Mr. Sheffield and wish him well in his new position.
Upcoming events at Thorsby High School include the administration of the Alabama High School Graduation Exam on Sept. 21-25. The school Book Fair begins Sept. 28. Please check the school system’s Web site at www.chiltonschools.org and visit the school’s web site by clicking on Thorsby High School for athletic schedules and upcoming events.
