David Driver was appointed the city’s first full-time fire chief Monday night by the Clanton City Council.
The five-member council voted unanimously for Driver’s appointment.
The council tabled the discussion about his appointment at its last meeting in July when members of the council said they wanted to meet with Driver before voting on the appointment.
Clanton Mayor Billy Joe Driver asked the council if the questions about the appointment had been satisfied.
Council members Bobby Cook and Mary Mel Martin said their questions had been answered.
Council member Jeff Price made the motion to appoint Driver, and Council member Greg Dejarnett seconded the motion.
Driver, a professional firefighter, is the first person to be hired to work full time in Clanton’s volunteer fire department.
His appointment will end when the current council’s terms of office end.
He, of course, can be reappointed to the position.
In other business, the council approved a zoning change for 800 Airport Road.
The council approved a zoning board recommendation to change the zoning on the property from M-1 to R-1-B.
The council also approved Donald Popwell to serve on the County’s Library Board.
His term will begin Oct. 1, 2009, and willrun through Sept. 30, 2013.
