Bears win in dramatic fashion

MONTGOMERY – Billingsley’s softball game against Faith Christian on Friday was like a seesaw.
Fortunately for the Bears, they ended on the upswing.
Billingsley went three-and-out in the top of the first inning then watched Faith score three runs in the bottom half of the frame.
But the Bears would fight back to take a 7-3 lead—right before Faith tied the game at 7 in the sixth inning.
Mary Beth Walker lined a double to centerfield, with two outs in the top of the seventh, to bring home Payton Wallace.
The Class 1A South Central Region tournament game got more interesting still, though, as Faith loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh.
But winning pitcher Summer Gaither got the Faith batter to line out to shortstop Wendy Raines, who alertly threw the ball to third base before the runner could get back.
With two outs, Billingsley catcher caught the Faith runner on second base attempting a steal, and Kim Lawrence applied the tag and set off the celebration.
“We made it way more interesting than it had to be,” coach Nathan Thompson said.
Billingsley plays Maplesville at 8 a.m. Saturday.
