41 local athletes qualify for state meets

Forty-one athletes from four schools qualified for state track and field meets with their performances last week in sectional meets.

Billingsley led the way with 21 athletes, Thorsby had nine, Isabella seven (see Sunday’s edition of The Clanton Advertiser), and Chilton County four.

CCHS’s 400-meter relay team of Chris Felder, Darnell Spears, Montel Wilkes and Andy Cannon qualified by finishing in the top six at sectionals. Cannon also qualified in the 200-meter dash. He finished second in the event.

The Class 5A state meet will be held May 1-2 at the City Municipal Track in Gulf Shores.

Thorsby’s Marcus Bray finished first in the 200-meter dash, second in the long jump and second in the triple jump. Teammate Dillian Simmons was fourth in the 400-meter run and fourth in the 800-meter run. The Rebels 1600-meter relay team, which is composed of Nathan Oldroyd, Zac Hensley, Philip Hicks and Kevin Brasher, also qualified.

Thorsby’s Mary Gasson qualified in the long jump, the 400-meter dash, the javelin and the discus. Sade Archie qualified in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, and Bianca Sanchez qualified in the javelin.

Billingsley’s boys team finished first in its sectional, and the girls finished second.

Boys qualifiers included: Jamar Hopson (100-meter dash, javelin, shot put and discus), Andrew Rawlinson (400-meter run, 1600-meter relay and javelin), Ted Goodson (400-meter run), Isaac Edwards (1600-meter run), Corey Champion (1600-meter run), Brady Edwards (1600-meter run), Jay Tyus (110-meter hurdles), triple jump, high jump and 300-meter hurdles), Bud Huffman (110-meter hurdles, 1600-meter relay, and 300-meter hurdles), Donte Vinson (110-meter hurdles, long jump and 400-meter relay), Jeffrey Odom (1600-meter relay), Andrew Davis (1600-meter relay, 100-meter dash and triple jump), Tim Simon (shot put, javelin), Octavis Harris (discus), Robert Speer (long jump, 400-meter relay) and Jimmy Lanier (400-meter relay).

Girls qualifiers included: Shanitra Kent (long jump, discus), Dominique Watkins (1600-meter run), Brittany Brown (200-meter dash, discus, long jump), Erica Huffman (1600-meter run, 1600-meter relay, 300-meter hurdles), Lori Davis (100-meter hurdle, 1600-meter relay, javelin) and Lakendria Frazier (1600-meter relay, 100-meter hurdles).

The Class 2A and 1A state meets will be held May 1-2 at the Troy University Track.
