The list of those who have yet to pay their 2008 property taxes will appear for the final time in Friday’s edition of The Clanton Advertiser, signaling some area property may be sold off by the county.
According to officials with the Chilton County Tax Collector’s office, 532 names have appeared in the newspaper each of the last three weeks, giving property owners one last chance to pay the required taxes or potentially lose their property.
The amount listed in the paper, which appears on pages 6 through 9 of Friday’s print edition of The Clanton Advertiser, is the full amount the property owner owes in full.
In total, officials say the amount of unpaid taxes comes to $176,858.06. This amount includes county, municipal, state taxes and other mileage amounts due. The listed amounts total higher than the original tax amounts simply due to the publication and notification costs incurred by the county since the Dec. 31, 2008 deadline.
The 532 listed is a significant increase over previous years. In 2005, more than 270 names were listed, while the number in 2006 was right at 300.
In the last four years, the number of delinquent taxes listed has increased 48.7 percent.
Those listed do have the month of April to clear up the amount owed before the property sale set for Monday, May 4.
