Jerry Grooms, commander for American Legion Post 6, is pleased to announce the Post will sponsor six outstanding high school juniors, three boys and three girls, from Chilton County Schools to attend the 2009 Alabama Boys and Girls State that will be held later in the year.

Applications have been sent to the six high schools in Chilton County from The Alabama American Legion and the Alabama Ladies Auxiliary in Montgomery.

In addition, Grooms and Barbara McAnally, Auxiliary president, will be contacting high school counselors this week with more information concerning applications and dateline dates.

There are several qualifications the American Legion and Auxiliary will consider with each application: Interest in government, leadership ability, character and honesty, scholarship, cooperativeness, and community participation and service.

Post 6 wants to encourage students who will be in the senior class next fall to talk with their school counselor if interested.

Boys State will be held at the University of Alabama from May 31 to June 6. Girls State will be held in June on Troy University campus.
