Elected to the first of her four consecutive terms on the Alabama State Board of Education’s District 3 seat in 1994, Stephanie Bell represents the people of Chilton County.

Bell played a major role in getting the board’s approval for a Jefferson State Community College branch in Clanton. A former prize-winning reporter with the Montgomery Advertiser, Bell used her journalistic talents to uncover duplication and waste in the state’s community college system.

She serves on the Education Commission on the States and was part of an 18-member National Association of State Boards of Education panel that dealt with the crisis in adolescence literacy. She has received awards including Outstanding Young Women of America, Friend of Education, the Emma Sansom Heroine, Alabama Homemaker of the Year and others.

She has been married 28 years to John Bell and is the mother of three daughters.

Alabama State Board of Education members serve four-year terms. She was elected for her fourth term in November, 2008.

A resident of Montgomery, Bell can be reached at 334-272-2777.
