MONTGOMERY — A campaign finance reform bill that would make it harder for candidates to hide the source of their campaign contributions has been approved by an Alabama House committee.

The bill to ban the practice of transferring campaign contributions from one political action committee to another passed the House Constitution and Elections Committee Thursday.

The bill by Rep. Jeff McLaughlin, a Democrat from Guntersville, bans all PAC to PAC transfers, with no exceptions. This is the eighth year McLaughlin has sponsored the bill. It has passed the House each year and most sessions died in the Senate.

Last year different versions of the bill passed the House and the Senate. Lawmakers were unable to resolve the differences in a conference committee.
