Chili Day to benefit CMC exercise room

Chilton Medical Center is hoping for a big turnout at their chili lunch sale tomorrow. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. for the price of $5 per ticket.

The hospital cafeteria will be serving a chili lunch to anyone who wishes to help support the Senior Connection’s exercise room construction.

The room has been under construction due to growth in the number of seniors who are visiting for daily exercise.

With the money raised on the day of the event, the senior citizen group is planning on paying off not only the final debt on the exercise room but also the purchase of at between 40 and 50 new chairs. McKinney said the group uses chairs in about 90 percent of their exercises since they are senior citizens.

“We have been growing in number, and now we just really need the space as well as the extra equipment we have had to purchase to put inside the new exercise room,” Senior Connection coordinator Vanessa McKinney said.

Senior Connection has nearly 200 members. Out of that number, at least 25 or more visit the exercise room at least once a day. The exercise room is a way to help the seniors not only stay active but also give them courage to achieve goals such as weight loss.

“All of the members get to encourage each other, and that really seems to help them reach their goals,” McKinney said.
