The Chilton Medical Center is planning a chili day to help raise money for their exercise room. Chili will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday Jan. 23. Tickets are available now and are being sold for $5 each.
Over the past year, the medical center has been working on expanding their senior citizen exercise room. With more members signing up the space for proper workouts was becoming inadequate and the hospital was forced to grow.
With nearly 200 members signed up for the program, the daily 25 people were becoming more and more.
“We have 54 active members and at any given time at least 25 of them are in the exercise room. With that many people we not only needed more space but we also needed more equipment,” said Vanessa McKinney, coordinator for the senior citizens.
With the money raised from chili day event the senior citizen group is planning on paying off not only the final debt they owe on the construction of the room but also the purchase of at least 40-50 new chairs. McKinney said the group uses chairs in about 90 percent of their exercises since the group is senior citizens.
Charlie Martin with Cahaba Glass helped out the center by placing in all of the glass on the new glass porch as well as giving a $500 donation to the groups project.
“Martin really helped us out by getting the glass put in so we could start using our room and we are very thankful to him,” McKinney said.
