A federal inmate was found dead after a hanging in his cell at the Shelby County Jail Tuesday.

According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, a correction’s officer found Luis Adrinol Diaz, age 21 of Birmingham, in his cell during a periodic check at 4:45 p.m. It appeared he had “improvised a method to hang himself in the cell,” according to a Sheriff’s Office press release. Diaz was booked into the facility on Oct. 2, in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Service and transferred into the medical unit on Oct. 4.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Shelby County Coroner were contacted and investigators responded to the jail to begin an investigation. ABI is investigating the death.
