Two Maplesville residents die in Shelby County crash

Alabama State Troopers have released the names of two people who were killed in a wreck on Interstate 65 North in Shelby County this morning.
Elizabeth Nichols, 56, and Columbus Nichols, 63, of Maplesville, suffered fatal injuries in a two-vehicle wreck involving a tractor trailer. Officials said a 12-year-old boy who was traveling with the Nichols was injured and transported to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured.
The wreck was reported around 7:30 a.m. Traffic was backed up in the northbound lanes for four hours as state troopers began their investigation. Calera Police were on hand to direct motorists to alternate routes.
The northbound lanes are now open.
