Gov. Bob Riley is directing flags to be flown at half-staff on state government buildings to honor those who lost their lives and gave their lives during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks seven years ago Thursday.

A joint resolution approved by Congress in 2001 designates September 11 of each year as Patriot Day. Flags on all federal buildings will be flown at half-staff by order of President Bush.

Riley is also encouraging local governments and schools to fly their flags at half-staff on their buildings.

Flags will return to flying at full-staff on Friday.
