The white man who was found dead Monday morning at a residence on County Road 530 has been identified.

Sheriff Kevin Davis said Tony Pierce, 50, of Verbena died of a single shotgun wound to the back. The victim died between 8:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:45 a.m. Monday.

A neighbor of the residence drove by the home early Monday morning and noticed that the front door was open. The victim was found dead in the bedroom.

Davis said the front door was apparently kicked in, but they do not know if anything was stolen from the residence.

No suspects have been arrested, but Davis said his department is following some leads in the case.

“We don’t have a motive at this time. We are still trying to investigate just what happened and why it happened,” Davis said.

Pierce lived in the residence alone, but he has family members who live nearby.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Department are the Chilton County Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force, Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, and the 19th Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

“There has been great cooperation between all agencies involved in the investigation,” Davis said. “We have been working together, and we are following every lead we have.”
