The Maplesville Red Devils defeated the Northview Chiefs of Century, Fla. 21-0 at home in a bizarre game that ended with 1:40 left to play in the third quarter after Northview players and coaches left the field.

The unique circumstances occurred after the Northview head coach was ejected from the game after receiving consecutive unsportsmanlike penalties. Following a discussion, the Chiefs decided to call the game.

Hubbert made sure to use the incident as a teachable moment for his players afterward in the locker room.

“We just talked about sportsmanship and reiderated the behavior that we make sure we condone in our program,” Maplesville head coach Brent Hubbert said.

Both teams traded possessions early on, with neither team able to really capitalize on opportunities in the red zone.

Terence Dunlap was a bright spot in an otherwise sluggish offensive performance, as he finished with 18 carries for 236 yards and three touchdowns.

Dunlap scored the lone touchdown between the teams in the first half on a 75-yard run, as the Red Devils led 6-0 heading into halftime.

“We’ve got the best running back in the state,” Maplesville offensive line Tyrone Davis said. “All you have to do is give him a little crease and he’s out of there.”

The offense began to establish a rhythm on the ground in the second half, which was fueled by scoring runs of 14 and 54 yards respectively by Dunlap in less than a two minute span.

It was the defense that helped keep Maplesville in the game as the offense heated up.

“I thought we did what we had to do on defense, but the offense was lackadaisical and sloppy at times,” Hubbert said. “We didn’t do the things we needed to do to execute. We’ve just got to go back to work to get those things cleared up.”

The Red Devils pitched a shutout and forced four turnovers that included three fumble recoveries and an interception.

“We’ve got some younger kids and we were coming off of an emotional win last week over a bigger school,” Hubbert said. “Learning how to deal with that roller coaster of emotion is difficult sometimes.”
