The sixth annual “Civil War Living History” event will take place Friday and Saturday at Confederate Memorial Park in Marbury.

“It’s for students and visitors,” Site Director Bill Rambo said. “It gives an up close and personal view of Civil War individuals and the various military branches.”

According to Rambo, the goal of both days is explain what went on in history and the reasons behind it.

A “skirmish” will take place on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. with about 100 volunteers taking part in the reenactment effort.

There are a few local participants, but the majority of the volunteers make the trip from areas throughout the state.

“Our numbers are small, but the crowd is going to be right up on the action,” Rambo said. “They will be able to see the loading of guns and the calling out of orders.”

A “Living History” portion of the event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday and again from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The event began in 2010 and in the past has received rave reviews, especially from teachers regarding its historical insight, Rambo said.

“All of the people are trained living historians, and they love to spread the knowledge,” Rambo said. “Unfortunately, a lot of people learn of history through Hollywood.”

According to Rambo, the spectator viewing area at the battlefield is shaded, and guides will be located at each gate of the park.

There will be a variety of living history stations for visitors, such as music, cavalry, wooden musket drills, flags and civilian way of life.

No charge will be required for any of the outdoor activities, but a $2 fee is required for admittance into the museum on site.

Self-guided tours are allowed of the military barracks and the commissary building.

Confederate Memorial Park is owned and operated by the Alabama Historical Commission and is located at 437 County Road 63 in Marbury.

“This is a service to the people,” Rambo said. “Come out and see a little live history.”
