Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon provided an update to members of the commission on Monday regarding plumbing issues at the jail.

During the May 11 commission meeting, Shearon told commissioners about the issues which included several pods at the jail that were leaking from the commodes.

Shearon told commissioners on Monday that most of the ‘leaks’ had been fixed with the help of County Maintenance Supervisor Pete Davenport.

“We went from about 70 problems down to about two,” Shearon said. “We seem to have a handle on the leaks, and all of the issues that we did have should be taken care of this week.”

Shearon originally told commissioners that problems with water leaking at the jail made the concrete floor slick, and Shearon was concerned with the leaks being a liability to the county if someone slipped and fell.

Jail Warden Trae Barfield told commissioners in May that toilets at the jail are flushed almost 200 times a day.

Barfield said at the time that when one repair was made, something else would break.

During the May meeting, commissioners voted to allow Shearon to solicit prices to rectify the problem to fix the immediate issues and prices to fix all of the plumbing issues at the jail.

On Monday, Shearon told commissioners he thought soliciting prices to rectify the plumbing issues at the jail was no longer necessary, due to many of the issues being fixed.

“Pete has really been helping us out and has been on top of it,” Shearon said.

Commissioners voted to rescind the previous motion made during the May meeting for Shearon to solicit prices for repair work.

Commissioners Joe Headley, Bobby Agee, Greg Moore, Allen Caton and Joseph Parnell voted in favor of rescinding the motion.

Commissioners Shannon Welch and Heedy Hayes were absent from Monday’s meeting.
