The Chilton County Tigers and Maplesville Red Devils junior varsity teams got the action started on Day 4 of the Chilton County Basketball Tournament with a game that went undecided until the final minutes before the Tigers pulled away for a 37-26 win on Friday.

The Tigers held on for the win to set up a date with the Jemison Panthers for the JV county championship on Saturday.

Tyler Williams led the Tigers with seven points and five rebounds.

Nathaniel Watson led the Red Devils with 11 points, 18 rebounds, five steals and a block.

The Panthers’ and Tigers’ girls teams took to the court next, and despite a close contest early, the Panthers pulled away down the stretch for a 34-14 win.

The Panthers finished on a 7-2 run and advanced to the championship round to take on the Thorsby Rebels on Saturday.

Karmen Mims led the Panthers with 11 points and six rebounds.

Kristina Caton led the Tigers with four points, three rebounds and three steals.

The fireworks were far from over for the night as the Chilton County Tigers and Maplesville Red Devils varsity boys took to the court in a matchup that required an extra period before the Tigers squeaked out a 72-62 win.

With a chance to ice the game, two Tiger free throws were off the mark, and with the rebound of the second shot falling into the hands of Maplesville’s Terence Dunlap, he raced the length of the court to execute a layup as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

Three points by Cade Hatch and two from Daimond Wilson gave the Tigers an early six-point lead to start the overtime period, but Anthony Moore drew the Red Devils back to within two points of the lead with a three-point basket. With 2:11 to play, Hatch sank two more free throws to make the Tigers lead four, 64-60.

With just 34 seconds to play, the Red Devils looked poised for a second comeback as Loftin Smith drew Maplesville to within two, 68-66.

Three more free throws by Hatch and one by Devin Austin were enough to outdo a single free throw from Dunlap as the Tigers escaped with the win to set up a date with the Verbena Red Devils for the county championship.

Hatch led the Tigers with 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals and a block.

Dunlap led the Red Devils with 33 points, three rebounds, two steals and a block.

The 2015 County Basketball Tournament will conclude Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. with the Jemison Panthers taking on the Chilton County Tigers in junior varsity action.

The Thorsby Rebels will take on the Jemison Panthers for the varsity girls championship at 4 p.m., and the Verbena Red Devils will take on the Chilton County Tigers for the varsity boys championship at 5:30 p.m.
