The Jemison City Council voted Monday to approve a holiday schedule for city hall to be closed three days the week of Christmas.

Council members voted to close city hall Dec. 24-26 for the Christmas holiday.

Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed told members of the council there would only be one council meeting for the month of December due to the second meeting falling on a date close to Christmas.

Reed also thanked numerous individuals and businesses for their work in putting on a successful Jemison Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

“It was the biggest one we have ever had,” Reed said. “There were so many wonderful people who stepped up to make that night a success, and we want to thank them all for working so hard.”

Reed acknowledged the first “Mr. and Ms. Jemison” who were selected at the tree lighting.

LaMerle Hamm, owner of Piggly Wiggly in Jemison, was recognized as “Ms. Jemison;” and Danny Hayes, owner of Hayes Drugs, was recognized as “Mr. Jemison.”

“We are really excited about that,” Reed said.

The council also voted to pass a resolution granting Jemison Fire Chief John Dennis the authority to enter into negotiations with Peach State Ambulance Company for the purchase of a rescue vehicle for the city.

The council also voted to approve the minutes from the Nov. 17 meeting and approved paying the appropriate bills.

The next council meeting in Jemison will be Jan. 5 at 6 p.m.
