A Chilton County man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Wednesday for manslaughter.

Richard J. Tyus, 21, of Clanton, was sentenced in Autauga County Circuit Court by Judge Sibley Reynolds.

Tyus pleaded guilty to manslaughter in September for the 2013 stabbing death of Brian Bernard Bristow, 28, of Marbury.

Tyus and Bristow attended a football party Sept. 30, 2013, in the Pink Lilly community, when they became involved in an argument, Chief Deputy of the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office Joe Sedinger said at the time.

Tyus stabbed Bristow, Bristow survived the attack, but later died Oct. 24, 2013, Sedinger said.

It was the only homicide investigated by the Autauga Sheriff’s Office for 2013.

Tyus was originally charged with assault in the case, but the charge was later upgraded to murder by a grand jury in Autauga County.

The state was seeking the 20-year sentence, according to court records.
