Charles “Boonie” Calvin Hughes, 89, of Verbena, passed away May 24.

He was born on March 2, 1925, in Montgomery, the son of the late James F. Hughes and the late Gladys H. Tucker.

He retired from Maxwell Air Force Base Civil Service.

He spent his retirement enjoying his garden and helping others in the community.

His love for his wife, daughters, granddaughters and great-grandchildren was exhibited every day of his life.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Lee Hughes of Verbena; daughters, Carolyn Hudson (Sonny) of Verbena and Sandra Driver of Verbena; granddaughters, Tammy McDow (Art) of Tallassee, Jennifer Davis (Robby) of Alabaster, Megan Dale (Avery) of Verbena; great-grandchildren, Will, Summer, Chase and Daniel McDow, Maddie Staggs, Sophie Davis and Emma Kate Dale, nieces and nephews and half-sister Johnnie Dennis (Roger) of Phoenix City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James F. Hughes and Gladys H. Tucker; brothers, James F. “Red” Hughes Jr. and Billy George Hughes.

Friends were received from 10-11 a.m. May 26 at Martin Funeral Home Chapel.

A celebration of the life of Charles “Boonie” Calvin Hughes was held May 26 at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment will follow in Mountain Creek Cemetery.
