Christ Independent Methodist Church

On a perfect Sunday morning, it was a real joy driving to church and admiring the blooming flowers along the way.

Our service began with the congregational singing of three popular old hymns: “To God Be the Glory,” We Bring the Sacrifice” and Come, Thou Fount.”

Dr. Mac Stinson’s service was based on Luke 34:13-35. His title was “Distracted by Disappointment.” In these passages, Jesus appears to two disciples on the way to Emmanus.

“And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, ‘What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?’ And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, ‘Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?’ And he said unto them, ‘What things?’ And they said unto him, ‘Concerning Jesus of Nazareth.’”

It was no coincidence that these two men became aware of Christ’s presence when they broke bread. “This is my body that was broken for you,” they heard the Master say. People have discovered Christ in their midst for over 2000 years every time the bread is broken and the cup is shared in Holy Communion as we experienced that sacrament on Sunday.
