Chilton County law enforcement stopped a man apparently in the middle of a violent crime spree from Tennessee to Florida.

Bobby Dale Huffines, 29, of Portland, Tenn. was arrested Oct. 27 after robbing two local restaurants and then fleeing officers in his vehicle and on foot.

Clanton Police have charged Huffines with  attempted murder, two counts of armed robbery, theft of property and numerous traffic violations.

Huffines allegedly robbed at gunpoint the Subway restaurant at Interstate 65 Exit 212 at about 10 p.m. on Oct. 27.

While officers were on the scene of the robbery shortly thereafter, a second robbery call was received, at 10:29 p.m.

“A person matching the description of the Subway robbery allegedly entered the Captain D’s Restaurant at the 205 Exit, forced everyone in back, took an unknown amount of money and fired a shot at the manager, barely missing her,” Stilwell said in a release. “It was later determined the gun jammed while trying to shoot again.”

A Clanton officer assigned to I-65 spotted a vehicle near the 202-mile marker at 10:36 p.m. matching the description of the one used in the robberies and pursued the suspect north.

Jemison police officers spiked the suspect’s tires near the 219-mile marker. After a brief foot pursuit, Clanton and Jemison officers, along with Chilton County Sheriff’s Department deputies, apprehended Huffines in the woods just off I-65 at about 11:15 p.m.

Huffines told investigators that he left Sumter County, Tenn. to travel to Florida, Stilwell said. He allegedly committed several robberies along the way to pay for the trip.

“He is not sure where these occurred, but he recalls possibly robbing a female at a gas station of money and an iPhone around the Alabama-Tennessee line,” Stilwell said. “He also thinks he might have hurt her. He might have also robbed a restaurant. He seems to recall Denny’s or some type of restaurant like a Denny’s along I-65.”

Huffines told police he couldn’t remember details about the other crimes because he had been abusing prescription medication and alcohol.

Huffines was in possession of a .22-caliber pistol that was stolen in Sumter County, Tenn. The gun was used in both Clanton robberies. The suspect also had zip ties prepared to be used as handcuffs and several facial covers.

“Clanton Police detectives are working with several agencies in North Alabama and Tennessee in order to bring closure to potentially numerous other cases,” Stilwell said. “I am proud of the work done by our agency and hope that we can assist others in brining justice to Mr. Huffines and closure to any other victims.”

Huffines was driving a white 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with Tennessee plates.

The suspect is being held at the Chilton County Jail. Bond has been set at $200,000.
