Military retirees thank scout for project

Carter Giles of Boy Scout Troop 57 was the guest speaker at the monthly Central Alabama Military Retirees Luncheon at Kountry Kitchen in Clanton on July 12.

Giles recently completed his Eagle Scout project, which involved placing the U.S.S. Chilton bell on display in the courthouse.

He spoke to those in attendance about the project and the steps it took to turn the original idea into a reality.

Giles took the opportunity to encourage everyone to add to the historical binders that accompany the bell in the courthouse.

The books contain pictures, stories and memorabilia that recognize veterans that have served in the military and also spent time in Chilton County at one point in their life.

“These are the stories of our veterans, and we don’t want that to be lost,” said Rachel Giles, Carter’s mother.

The information does not have to be offered up by a veteran’s family, but can be added by anybody who knew them and their story.

“It can always use a little more,” Carter Giles said.

When reading through the documents, Rachel Giles hopes that everyone can feel the sacrifice made by so many and further develop a sense of appreciation for that sacrifice.

“You may find out that you live next to a veteran and didn’t even know it,” Rachel Giles said. “It’s good to know your neighbors and honor them.”

Carter Giles thanked the retirees for their service and they in return sincerely thanked him for all that he did to recognize the veterans through his project.

The show of respect and appreciation was evident by everyone involved at the luncheon.

“The comments we have received over the past few weeks since then have all been positive,” Rachel Giles said. “I have been amazed.”

The Central Alabama Military Retirees meet for lunch and discussion at Kountry Kitchen on the second Wednesday of every month.

Chris Speaks is currently scheduled to be the guest speaker at the next lunch on Aug. 9.
