Farmers welcome twin calves

Twin bull calves were born on different days at Peek Farms in Collins Chapel.

As fireworks lit up the sky in observance of Independence Day, Brandon and Kelli Farris Peek observed a rare occurrence of calves on their farm in Collins Chapel.

On Peek Farms a registered Angus cow gave birth to twin bull calves – one on the Fourth of July around 3 p.m., but the second bull was not born until July 5 around 8 p.m.

“The bulls are doing fantastic,” said Kelli Peek. “The mom took to both of them, and they are growing and getting more active each day.”

Twinning, as it is referred to, is a result of multiple ovulations from the female and is not a result of the bull that is servicing the female.

“To ensure that they are both receiving adequate nourishment, my husband and I go to the catch pen once a day with a heated bottle,” Peek said. “It is not very common that twin calves are born, especially two bulls that are both doing well.”
