Committee approaches Thorsby’s council about new park

Thorsby’s Swedish Festival Committee wants to contribute to another park, and the town’s council on Monday gave the committee permission to develop a plan for the project.

Tom Huett with the committee addressed the council Monday about the group’s wish to spend some of the money leftover from the festival on a park, which would be located on town-owned property adjacent to Dollar General.

Huett said committee members thought residents on that side of Highway 31 and the railroad would benefit from having a park they could walk to without crossing the road and railroad.

The piece of property that could be turned into a park is about a half an acre.

The council also voted to allow Public Works Director Terry Jackson to spend up to $22,000 to purchase two pick-up trucks from the state via auction this week.

Jackson said he would like to sell two Ford Ranger trucks the town owns, if he was able to acquire the other trucks. Those trucks have between 125,000 and 155,000 miles each.

Jackson said the Rangers can’t haul as much material as needed, or tow some equipment the department needs.

Jackson said he thought he could sell the Rangers for about $4,000 each.

The trucks Jackson could purchase have been used by the state and have about 50,000 miles, he said.

In other business, the council:

•Received a sample 10-year plan from Calvin Cassady, a representative of an engineering firm. Cassady said a complete plan would be provided for about $7,510. The plan included analyses of the town’s infrastructure, employees, equipment and needed projects.

•Heard from representatives of the robotics program at LeCroy Career Technical Center. Students in the program are headed to a national competition in Orlando and are seeking donations.
