Keeping an eye on the future

The Thorsby softball program hosted a camp on Feb. 25 for those interested in playing softball at a younger age.

The camp was held at the Thorsby softball field and is something that Leighsa Robinson began during her time as head coach at Jemison High School and has continued it since taking over at Thorsby.

Its purpose is to teach the fundamental aspects of the game with drills in throwing, fielding and hitting.

“I do it because I love the game and my players,” Robinson said.

About eight girls signed up and participated in the camp that was instructed by Robinson with assistance from each member of the softball team.

According to Robinson, one of the results of the camp is that it creates a stronger bond between the young players and those at the high school level.

As a result, when they are up in the stands watching a high school game they can feel a part of that because a connection has already been made during the time spent at the camp.

“It’s a great experience, because you’re teaching them but you also learn a little more as well,” senior Anna Hilyer said. “They look up to us.”

This was Hilyer’s first year assisting with the camp, and she made sure to stress the importance of teamwork.

“If you don’t come together as a team, it won’t end up well,” Hilyer said.

The majority of the girls that took part in the camp came from the Thorsby community and will one day have the chance to leave their own mark on the Thorsby softball program.

“This is our future out here,” Robinson said.
