Higgins Ferry paving nearly complete

Work on the boat ramp at Higgins Ferry Park should be complete by this weekend, Park Ranger Frank Atkinson said.

The park’s boat launch has been either fully or partially closed for the past several days due to a paving project, which involved resurfacing and leveling the ramp. The final concrete was poured Wednesday morning, Atkinson said.

The next step will be to resurface the parking lot near the launch. The paving is scheduled to begin Tuesday.

“There’s a possibility they can do it all in one day, but it will probably go over into Wednesday before they can get it all open,” Atkinson said.

Fortunately, every area of the park should be open this weekend, including the swimming area and boat launch.

When work resumes next week, the parking lot will be lengthened by as much as 8 feet in areas where expansion is possible. This will allow the lot to better accommodate boat trailers.

“That’s going to help a whole lot,” Atkinson said.

He explained that the paving is being done at no cost to the county. The state leases the property from Alabama Power, and the county only maintains the parking lot as needed.
