Fair as popular as ever in 2010

An estimated 12,000 people attended the Chilton County Fair last week, from Monday, Sept. 27 through Saturday, Oct. 2.

Tuesday night saw the largest number of people in attendance on a Tuesday night in the fair’s history (about 3,000) as well as record participation in the annual Demolition Derby, with 15 cars participating.

The numbers were also high Friday night, as an estimated 3,500 people made their way through the gate, according to event coordinators.

“Everything went real well. The weather was perfect all week with good attendance every night,” said Maurice Lyn of the Clanton Kiwanis Club, the fair’s sponsoring organization.

“The only thing that might have hurt us was the Alabama game being on TV Saturday night,” Lyn noted. “Everybody was at home watching the game.”

Kissel Entertainment offered a few more rides this year, and the variety of musical entertainment was popular. Music ranged from gospel to bluegrass and country to rock and pop.

Overall, the success of the fair was comparable to that of 2009, Lyn said. The total amount raised to go toward charity had not been calculated as of Monday.

Among the charities supported by the Kiwanis are the Chilton County Emergency Assistance Center, Farm City Week, Chilton/Clanton Public Library, YMCA, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, JHS Key Clubs, Girls Softball, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, Dixie Youth, college scholarships, Reading is Fundamental, Operation: Santa Claus, Raleigh’s Place, Care Net, March of Dimes, Red Cross, Iodine Deficiency, Foster Children Christmas, Chilton County Schools and the Chilton County Humane Society.
