Kids will learn law enforcement in Junior Deputy Academy

The Chilton County Sheriff’s Office will hold its Junior Deputy Academy next week, July 11 -15.

The program is open to children between the ages of 11 and 15 and will be held at the Jefferson State Community College Clanton campus.

“It was a great success last year,” said Sheriff Kevin Davis. “Our off-duty deputies come in and help the kids see what we do.”

Students will learn about topics the sheriff’s office faces every day, including drug awareness, self-discipline and first aid/CPR. The students will also participate in a mock crime scene and a mock trial.

Davis said he expects between 50-60 campers this year. He also said in addition to educating the students, he hopes to change stereotypes children may have about law enforcement.

“The biggest thing we want to do is interact with the kids,” he said. “A lot of the time kids hear from their parents that if they don’t go to school or buckle their seatbelt that, ‘The police will get you,’ and I’m guilty of it too. We want to build relationships with these kids, and we want to be their friends.”

Davis also said the same principle applied for the entire community, not just children.

“One of the things [I stressed when I became sheriff] is that I don’t want your only contact with the sheriff’s department to be in a time of need,” he said. “We want to be there in good times too.”

Once the week is over, a graduation ceremony is held and students are presented with certificates and awards. While registration ended last week, those seeking more information on the academy for next year can call 205-755-4698.
