Jemison City Park will host event to benefit veterans

Jemison officials want the whole city to show its support for veterans during an upcoming event.

A day of celebration to benefit veterans is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 at Jemison City Park.

“This is a great thing for our city,” Jemison Mayor Eddie Reed said. “We want to support our veterans, who have given of themselves to protect the freedoms and the liberties we enjoy.”

The City Council, at a regular meeting Monday, approved to allow the event to be held at City Park.

Proceeds from the event will benefit local veterans organizations.

Many vendors are already registered. The event will also include gospel and country singing and a car show.

Anyone wishing to enter a vehicle or tractor in the show should contact Councilman George Brasher at (205) 287-1082.

For more information about the event, call Burnis Smith at (205) 668-1664.

The city of Jemison sent out a letter to businesses about the event, requesting that businesses fly an American flag on Aug. 6 in a show of support.

“Let’s show our patriotism and show the veterans how much we as citizens of this great nation and city of Jemison…appreciate the great sacrifice our veterans made in keeping the liberty and freedoms we cherish for all of us,” the letter reads in part.

In other business, the Council:

•Approved July 5 as the date candidates seeking public office in the city can begin qualifying. Qualifying will end July 19, and the municipal election will be held Aug. 23.

•Approved the 2015 audit. Reed said the auditor, Howie McNeill, spoke favorably of the Council’s efforts.

•Approved minutes from the June 6 meeting.

•Approved paying necessary bills.
