The Gardens of Clanton did its part to remember those whose lives have been affected during breast cancer awareness month with a ceremony on Tuesday.

Pink was the color of the day, as residents and staff all wore pink as well as decorations that matched the occasion.

The community was involved with the event, as Clanton Middle School cheerleaders donated pink pom-poms for each resident.

Lynn Cox was the guest speaker and talked about her battle with breast cancer and shared her story of being a cancer-free for the past year.

“It was really touching to hear her testimony,” Gardens of Clanton Administrator Vickie Jones said. “There were definitely tears. You couldn’t help it.”

She concluded the ceremony by singing “The promise” and “I am not alone” to those in attendance.

Each resident released a pink balloon into the sky to honor the memory of someone that they know that has lost their life to cancer.

According to Jones, the Gardens of Clanton have been holding similar events each October for the past 12 years.

It is a cause that has always held a special place in Jones’ heart because her aunt died of cancer.

“It means a lot to take the time to remember,” Jones said. “We’ve got to work together in times like that. It is something that can completely change the way a person lives their life.”
