The busy summer continued for the Chilton County High School band, which was presented a check for $2,000 by State Senator Cam Ward on Friday.

The money was part of a grant that came from the education budget.

“These grants are so important, because a little bit can go a long way,” Ward said. “They sorely need it, and those folks will make sure that they use it well.”

The donation will be added to the $1,000 check presented to the program by state representative Jimmy Martin on July 27.

Together both donations will allow Chilton County High School Director of Band Matt Martindale to buy a larger trailer before the football season gets underway.

“It’s been a little different compared to previous year,” Martindale said. “There always seems to be something going on.”

Ward was contacted in the spring and the band found out about a month ago regarding the grant’s status.

Chilton County High School already received new band uniforms for 2016.

“The students are starting to understand that this is turning out to be something bigger than what they’ve seen in the past,” Martindale said.

According to Ward, each senator and house member gets a certain amount to give out with the purpose of using toward education and in conjunction with the schools.

Jemison High School’s band program received a similar donation prior to the start of school last year.

“It helps the community and the school by making sure that they have the tools that they need to succeed,” Ward said. “I like helping bands when I can, because unfortunately often times they are low on the totem pole in terms of funding.”
