Senior Connection held a bake sale on Wednesday and gave residents the opportunity to buy homemade desserts prior to Thanksgiving.

It was the third time that a bake sale was held with the community coming out in support each time.

According to Senior Connection Treasurer Sammy Wyatt, while each fundraiser is important, the bake sales have been among the most successful.

“That’s how we survive,” Wyatt said.

About 30 volunteers baked goods for the event, with several making multiple dishes.

Baked dishes lined the counter of the Senior Connection kitchen, under the rule that each item had to be homemade.

The selection offered a variety of desserts that included an assortment of cakes, pies, cookies and divinity.

Desserts that residents gravitate to are layer cakes and coconut cakes, Wyatt said.

“It is just something that we have found out that the people seem to enjoy,” Wyatt said.

The timing of the event on the day before Thanksgiving was an opportunity to capture the interest of people who perhaps didn’t have a dish to bring along for the holiday meal.

One thing that has been proven from the recent success of the bake sales is that Chilton County has quite the sweet tooth.

Senior Connection’s next fundraising event will be the Black and White Christmas Ball on Dec. 10 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The annual Black Eye Pea Luncheon will follow in January.
