School system’s Adequate Yearly Progress reports to be released

The 2010-2011 Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) reports will officially be released by the state Monday, Aug. 1.

The annual reports look at reading scores, math scores, percentage of students taking standardized tests, attendance records and graduation rates.

Seven Chilton County schools failed to make AYP in 2009-2010, while Maplesville High School, Jemison Intermediate School, Verbena High School and Jemison Elementary School met their goals.

Last year, Chilton County High School, Thorsby School, Clanton Elementary, Clanton Intermediate, Clanton Middle, Isabella High School and Jemison High School did not meet the required goals.

Each school has goals for the evaluated items, including different goals for certain subgroups based on race and other socio-economic categories. One school might have seven goals, while another might have 20 or more. It depends on the school’s size, grade levels and other criteria.

Each school has to meet 100 percent of its goals to achieve AYP and is evaluated by the Alabama Department of Education.

“Reading and math are areas we had problems with the last school year with special education students,” said Willie Mae White, assistant superintendent/personnel director. “We really do not know yet; we’re just waiting for the reports on Monday.”

Last year, School Improvement Specialist and Professional Development Coordinator Karen Mitchell told The Clanton Advertiser the main issue for the school system is reading test scores for special needs students, which caused five out of seven schools to not make AYP.

Jemison High School and Chilton County High School failed to make it because of reading scores for all students.

Schools who fail to make AYP two years in a row are placed on the improvement list and must meet their goals for two years to get off the list.

For 2009-2010, the county had two schools on school improvement, Thorsby and CCHS.

Superintendent Dave Hayden and other board officials will meet with all principals Monday morning to discuss the 2010-2011 AYP results.
