Advertiser earns several APA awards

The Alabama Press Association recently announced the recipients of its 2020 media awards.

The Clanton Advertiser was able to bring home honors across the fields of editorial, advertising and magazine.

Of these honors, the newspaper won four categories, finished second place six times and earned seven third place awards.

The finalists were chosen from content created during 2019.

The top honors included best use of photographs/editorial content, best newsprint special section, best feature photo and best single ad.

“Coosa Currents” laid claim to the best newsprint special section, while Keith McCoy’s photo of “girl scared of snake during reptile show” took home best feature photo, and Brandy Clackley’s Chilton County Chamber of Commerce ad design was worthy of the best single ad.

Not only did “Coosa Currents” win best newsprint special section, but “Spring Guide” was voted second-best in that category.

The magazine and special sections continued to rack up the awards, as “Salute a hero” by Joyanna Love was third place in best magazine personality profile.

The Clanton Advertiser’s sports coverage also garnered some recognition with a photo taken by Anthony Richards of a pumped-up Noah Walls during Maplesville’s 2019 lift-a-thon finished second place in the running for best sports photo.

The photo lost out to the eventual photo of the year winner.

It was only fitting that the Maplesville vs. Isabella football game, arguably the most anticipated sports event of 2019 in Chilton County, earned some type of honor.

The combined coverage of the game by Richards, J.R. Tidwell and Brandon Sumrall was recognized as third place in the best sports news in-depth coverage category.
