THS athletes receive sportsmanship awards

Jerrett Posey, John Ryan Wood and Adi Niamon were each recognized by the AHSAA for their excellent sportsmanship during the 2017-18 sports season.

The three were recipients of awards for exhibiting great sportsmanship, ethics and integrity on and off the playing fields.

Principal Corey Clements had an integral part in nominating the three student-athletes.

“It’s hard when you lose a close game to remember that the other team worked hard for that win,” Niamon said.

According to Posey, self-control plays a key role in maintaining ones emotions during a sporting event.

“It’s a part of life,” Posey said. “You have to use that emotion, but not let it control you. It’s definitely something you have to work on.”

As is the case with all three players, their families played vital parts in teaching the values of being a good sport at an early age.

“I try to just play the game as it is and don’t talk very much smack,” Wood said.

In many ways the reward is a reflection of not only the hard work put forth by the student-athlete, but also of the support staff that surrounds them.

Thorsby High School had a successful 2017-18 season across several sports. Having three student-athletes that stand out as both players and people is something that the program can take additional pride in.
