Thorsby FFA claims three state titles at state competition, 11th straight for meat evaluation

Thorsby High School maintained its spot amongst the best FFA programs in the southeast collecting three state championships at the Alabama FFA State Competition on June 5. The Rebels added three highest-scoring individuals to their list of accolades at this year’s state competition.
Thorsby’s meat evaluation team captured its 11th consecutive state championship to lead the school’s charge. The meat evaluation team of Bryan Byrd, Abdul Elkhatib, Madison Hammock, Brady Mims, Shelby Price and Easton Robinson helped continue the more than a decade of dominance. Hammock was the highest-scoring individual in the event. Thorsby’s meat evaluation team advances to the national competition at the 98th National FFA Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana from Oct. 29-Nov. 1.
Joining the meat evaluation team at nationals is the dairy evaluation team who won the state championship on June 5 as well. Lilly Smith was the highest-scoring individual in the event, and she was joined by Maci Hucks, MaryAlice Johnson, Paisley Kendrick, Ava Robinson and Claire Smith on the team.
Thorsby’s poultry evaluation team is the third team to advance to nationals after claiming the state title. Brett McCluskey, Claire Smith, Lilly Smith and Mary Leigh Williams make up the team, and Williams was the highest-scoring individual in the competition.
The Rebels’ land evaluation team of Ava Robinson, Seth Rodriguez, Lilly Smith, Mary Leigh Williams and Luke Wilson finished runners up at the state competition.
