The annual Peach Run hosted by Cornerstone Fitness & Wellness took over the streets of Clanton for its 21st chapter of the beloved run that welcomed in local runners and as those far and wide. A signature event during the Chilton County Peach Festival each year, the Peach Run had 125 runners participate this year. While the numbers were still high, it was where they were from that made the biggest impact.
Runners from as far as Nashville, Tennessee, New York City and St. Petersburg, Florida came to participate in the Peach Run.
“This is just a way Mr. Barry and Cornerstone always help kick off the peach festivities, and they have grown quite a bit,” Lesia Childress, Fitness Director at Cornerstone Fitness & Wellness, said. “It is just a tradition, and for as long as we can I think we will be having that Peach Run every year.”
Cornerstone was again the starting and finishing point for the Peach Run that meandered through downtown Clanton and the surrounding areas. Eighty runners signed up for the race prior to race day, and that number bloomed to well over 100 runners quickly.
Cornerstone owner Barry Baker remembered the Peach Run growing up that was put on by the local Kiwanis Club before it went away for a few years. When Baker created Cornerstone, bringing the Peach Run back was important to him. Now, it has caught on again and turned into a great event each June for the community.
“We love our community, and I have family that is in the peach business, so we know what a huge part of the community that is,” Baker said. “We love being a part of it and doing something each year to contribute to the Peach Festival, and hopefully it keeps bringing people in.”
In the 10k run, Ryan Stanford took the male top overall winner with a time of 39:02.17, followed by Neal Ousley (48:01.44) in second place and Joe Boros in third place (52:29.25). Samantha Sims won the 10k female top overall spot completing the run in 43:59.28. Sims was followed by Rachel Costa in second place with a 47:35.97, and Alicia Rogue in third place with a 48:02.50.
The 5k run saw Draven Patterson take the top male overall winner with a time of 19:46.45, followed by William Harrison in second place (20:05.83) and Cameron Castleberry in third place (22:47.12). This year was the third year the Peach Run hosted its one-mile fun run, and the group participating in the run had 15 runners, and it was won by Jackson Hood with a 7:53.12.
A record 57 door prizes were donated to the Peach Run by local businesses around Chilton County and they were drawn for the runners following the run, something the runners at the Peach Run told Childress was a massive draw for them and not a lot of other runs do. Durbin Farms provided baskets of fresh peaches to give to the winners of each division in the run, and Alabama Congressman Gary Palmer provided the funding for the shirts given to each runner for participating.
