The Clanton City Council meeting on June 9 saw the passing of one ordinance and the passing of five resolutions.
Caleb McKee was also recognized during the meeting for his bravery in assisting first responders to a car accident on May 2.
The ordinance passed was to authorize changes and improvements to certain city streets.
“Whereas the city council of Clanton, Alabama, has determined it serves a public purpose to implement changes and improvements to certain city streets and intersections within the City of Clanton to improve the flow of traffic and create a safer environment for all citizens,” read City Councilman Billy Singleton during the meeting.
The streets affected will be English Street, 4th Avenue S., 14th Street, 2nd Street N. and County Road 41. There will be one-way thru traffic from 4th Avenue S. to 14th Street, speed breakers and bumps installed on English Street, and the speed limit on County Road 41 will be changed to 45 mph.
The city council passed five resolutions during the meeting. A few resolutions were for grant application considerations. The first grant application was for Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency (SAFER) through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The second grant application was for safety equipment — four video laryngoscopes.Laryngoscopes are a required piece of equipment for every safety department to have in Alabama, according to Clanton Fire Chief David Driver. Laryngoscopes are used by first responders to breathe for an injured person who has stopped breathing. Video laryngoscopes can increase the speed of a first responder’s assistance with breathing.
“When someone’s not breathing, that’s critical and we’ve got to get oxygen going back there as quickly as we can,” said Driver.
A resolution for the consideration to approve an invoice from Martin Service Company, Inc. for the sound and lighting system at Corner Park was passed.
Finally, a resolution was approved for the consideration to approve a grant for two license plate readers. Both of which will be on 2nd Avenue, according to Mayor Mims.
