American Legion Chilton County Post 216 is continuing their tradition of keeping baseball going in the county throughout the month of June this year, and it is celebrating 100 years of American Legion Baseball by fielding two teams this season. Post 216’s season began on June 3 at Jack Hays Field as opening ceremonies for the season were held.
“Millions of young men and women have played American Legion Baseball since its founding in 1925,” a press release from American Legion Baseball said. “Greats such as Yogi Berra, Ted Williams and Albert Pujols have played American Legion Baseball. Players in our program are taught good citizenship and a code of sportsmanship that includes keeping the rules, keeping faith in teammates, keeping their tempers, physical fitness, a stout heart in defeat, keeping pride under in victory, a sound soul, clean mind and healthy body. (We are) proud of our team and our association with American Legion Baseball. We hope the community can join us in cheering for the players and celebrating this remarkable program.”
Opening ceremonies for Post 216 welcomed members of their post and former players back to celebrate the centennial of American Legion Baseball. American Legion Auxiliary, Chilton County Unit 216’s Rhonda Joyner sang the national anthem, and American Legion State Commander Willie Rogers threw out the first pitch. The junior varsity team played prior to the varsity team, which is how the schedule will be the entire 2025 season.
