Jacob Logan Layne
Jacob Logan Layne, age 11, of Thorsby, Alabama, passed away on May 8, 2025, at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, after a courageous battle with fibrolamellar carcinoma. He was surrounded by love every step of the way.
Jacob was born on May 30, 2013, in Homewood, Alabama, to Daniel “DJ” Layne and Nicole Sullivan Pike. A sixth grader at Jemison Intermediate School, Jacob was a bright, determined, and loving young boy who touched countless lives with his gentle heart and goofy personality.
Jacob had a deep love for science and experiments, and while he was great at math, he openly detested reading. He enjoyed his time at the school’s aftercare program, proudly calling it “his fun time.” Jacob found joy in video games on his PS5 and Nintendo Switch, building Legos, riding his bike, swimming, and playing basketball in the summertime. He had a love-hate relationship with karate, but never failed to show up and try his best. Most of all, Jacob cherished spending time with his friends.
He had a legendary appetite—spaghetti, pancakes, mac and cheese, popsicles (one after another), and ice cream (which he could finish faster than anyone else) were among his favorites. His zest for life was mirrored in every laugh, every game, and every moment spent with the people he loved.
Jacob had a heart of gold. Tender-hearted and loyal, he loved deeply—people and animals alike. He was smart, silly, respectful, and strong-willed. He was his dad’s “bestest buddy” and a devoted momma’s boy. He loved his parents and sisters with everything he had.
He is survived by: Father, Daniel “DJ” Layne of Jemison; Mother, Nicole (Earl) Pike of Thorsby; Sister, Alyssa Layne of Thorsby; Sister, Savannah Layne of Thorsby; Brother, Zayne Pike of Thorsby; Sister, Anna (Austin) Headley of Jemison; Paternal Grandmother, Marsha Simmons of Jemison; Paternal Grandfather, David Layne of Alabaster; Maternal Grandmother, Cynthia (David Hudson) Cooper of Montevallo; Maternal Grandfather, James Sullivan of Montevallo; Grandparents, Dennis and Jan Pike of Clanton; Great Grandmother, Jean Ludolf of Hueytown; along with many friends and a community who loved him dearly.
He is preceded in death by: Grandfather, Joe Simmons; and Grandfather, Ricky Cooper.
