“We just keep fighting until we can find a cure.”
The signature event of Relay For Life in Chilton County took center stage on May 3 as the Strike Out Cancer Survivor Breakfast was held at First Methodist Church in Clanton to honor those who have beaten, or are still in their fight against, cancer.
Chilton County Relay For Life Organizer Sunny Mays has made sure the survivor breakfast remains a staple in the county every May to kick off the county’s Relay month. The baseball-themed breakfast this year was prepared by Crissi Hand and Ruth Coker, and guests were treated to food and entertainment.
“I thought it was pretty good … We still had a large number of survivors come out,” Mays said.
Students from the Blast From The Past crew and performers from Just Twirl It and Impact Martial Arts were part of the entertainment of the breakfast. Survivors were awarded their Survivor Medals to commemorate their successful fight against cancer, bingo was played and door prizes from local businesses were handed out as part of the breakfast activities.
Along with the Chilton County Relay For Life Queens, the other five groups of queens in Chilton County attended the breakfast, helped serve guests, made a survivor table and donated to Chilton County Relay for Life.
“For me, (having this breakfast each year) just means we keep fighting and celebrating the survivors,” Mays said. “Through the breakfast we want to celebrate the survivors and those still fighting to let them know we are behind them, we are with them and if they need anything they just need to let us know.”
Sponsors for this year’s survivor breakfast included Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Clanton Lions Club, Deb Taylor, First Baptist Church, First Methodist Church, Mandi Fortner-State Farm, Marion Bank, Martin Funeral Home, Petty Line Construction, Town of Maplesville, UAB St. Vincent’s Chilton and West End Baptist Church.
