Chilton County High School’s junior varsity boys team stole the show for the Tigers’ programs this week by capturing the Over The Mountain JV Tournament in Hoover.
The Tigers won all four games at the tournament, capped by a 1-0 win over John Carroll Catholic High School in the final by way of a Jeslin Arias goal in the waning minutes off an assist from Rex Totten. To get there, CCHS beat Minor and Shades Valley High Schools each 4-0, followed by a narrow 2-1 win over Gardendale High School in the semifinals.
“I love the way these young guys play together,” Brandon Gurganus, CCHS varsity boys head coach, said. “They are so unselfish and they do not care who scores the goals or gets the credit. I am excited about the future.”
The team is currently 12-1-1 this season with their final game coming on April 21 against Prattville Christian Academy.
In varsity action, the boys team took a home win over Sylacauga High School 1-0 on April 17 with the minutes being split between the varsity players and some of the JV players from the Over The Mountain Tournament. It was stalemate throughout the match with the only breakthrough coming from a Sylacauga own goal. The varsity girls fell on the same night 4-0.
“We wanted to let the seniors have their moment while getting the young guys some invaluable varsity experience. Both groups played extremely hard,” Gurganus said.
Both teams finish their seasons on the road for the final two matches — April 18 at Marbury High School and April 21 at PCA.
