AOTW: Jones leads AHSAA in nabbing runners

Billingsley High School’s Landon Jones is this week’s athlete of the week after his performances during the week of April 11-17. The senior catcher helped the Bears clinch the Class 1A Area 6 championship with a perfect 8-0 record, and has been nearly flawless behind the plate with his defense.

Jones leads the AHSAA this season in throwing out baserunners. According to the latest MaxPreps statistics that were recently released, Jones has thrown out 14 of the 17 runners who have tried to steal on Billingsley — a .824 percent clip. Jones also boasts a .994 fielding percentage for himself manning the infield for the Bears.

Jones saw a productive week at the plate, producing in each of Billingsley’s four games. He was 2-for-3 against LAMP High School to start the week on April 14, then followed it up the next day with his best game of the week against West Blocton High School going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Jones and the Bears took down local rival Verbena High School in the first round series of the AHSAA Class 1A State Baseball Playoffs on April 17 with a 2-0 sweep. Jones was 1-for-4 in game one and had two RBIs in game two.
